The Institute for the Study of War reports that the Russian army's offensive in Ukraine is stalling.

The ISW report includes data from the British Ministry of Defence confirming a decrease in the pace of Russian advancement every month since November 2024. According to the data, in November, Russian troops captured about 730 km², while in December - 393 km², in January 2025 - 326 km², in February - 195 km², and in March - only 143 km². The ISW analysis shows that the Russian army advanced by 627 km² in November 2024, 569 km² in December, 427 km² in January, 354 km² in February, and 203 km² in March.

'The British Ministry of Defence is likely using a different methodology or sources to assess Russian advancement in Ukraine, but the UK MoD report is consistent with ISW data showing a decrease in monthly Russian advancement from November 2024 to March 2025. In recent weeks, Ukrainian forces have conducted local counterattacks in the Pokrovsk and Toretsk directions, regaining lost positions in those areas and contributing to the slowdown of Russian advancement in Ukraine,' the report states.

The ISW analysis explains the slowing pace of the Russian offensive due to successful operations by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In particular, in March, Ukrainian troops conducted local counterattacks in the Pokrovsk and Toretsk directions, regaining lost positions and slowing down the advancement of the Russian army in Ukraine.

Analysis and Context:

The Institute for the Study of War's statement about the slowdown of the Russian offensive in Ukraine is an important signal. The information presented shows that Ukrainian forces are successfully resisting Russian aggression and regaining control over some territories. Local counterattacks in the Pokrovsk and Toretsk directions confirm this. The influence of ISW and the British Ministry of Defence on the situation in Ukraine is difficult to overestimate, as these organizations have detailed data and analysis in the field of military operations.
