U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken reported that Russia seriously considered the possibility of a nuclear strike, but China opposed it. He stated this in his interview with FT on January 3.
Responding to a question about how seriously the U.S. perceived the threat of nuclear weapons from Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Blinken noted that the U.S. was very concerned, as Putin likely considered the possibility of a nuclear strike.
'Even if there is a 15% probability, it is still very serious,' emphasized the U.S. Secretary of State.
According to Blinken, nuclear weapons were one of the few issues where China could assist the U.S., despite Beijing's support for Russia.
'We have reason to believe that China reached out to Russia and said: 'Don't do this,' said the U.S. Secretary of State.
Earlier, Blinken revealed the contents of a new defense package for Ukraine.
