When we celebrate the Day of the SBU

The Day of the Security Service of Ukraine is traditionally celebrated every year on March 25. This date was established by the decree of the President of Ukraine No. 193/2001 on March 22, 2001. It is dedicated to the establishment of the SBU, which took place on March 25, 1992. On this day, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Law 'On the Security Service of Ukraine', confirming the creation of the SBU as a separate state body.

History of the holiday

The Security Service of Ukraine was created on the basis of the Committee for State Security (KGB) of the Ukrainian SSR after gaining independence. Since its inception, its main task has been to organize work to counter threats, protect sovereignty, territorial integrity, constitutional order, and state interests.

The SBU has gone through numerous stages of reform, adapting its methods and structures to modern challenges. Its role became especially important after 2014, when Ukraine faced hybrid warfare, the annexation of Crimea, and hostilities in the east of the country. During this period, the Security Service took on important functions for combating terrorism, espionage, and separatist movements.

The history of the SBU is closely linked to the protection of statehood, ensuring information security, and countering external threats. Its employees carry out tasks that are crucial for maintaining stability and security in Ukraine.

The Day of the Security Service of Ukraine is a symbol of recognition of the important role of the employees of this structure in protecting national security.

Moreover, this day allows for the support of the morale of employees and reminds society of the significance of their work. Celebrations, awards, meetings with veterans, and public events contribute to strengthening mutual understanding between society and law enforcement agencies.
