Aviation expert Valeriy Romanenko claims that the use of nuclear weapons by Russia against Ukraine is impractical due to the high risk of radioactive contamination of a large area in Russia.
'If the 'Oreshnik' missile has a standard nuclear warhead, the damage area will indeed be very serious. This is the power of a nuclear bomb ranging from 600 kilotons to 1.2 megatons. Therefore, if the Kremlin decides to use such weapons, Russia as a whole may receive a similar response, which will then need to be fixed,' Romanenko stated during his appearance on Espreso.
The expert also emphasizes that most likely, Russia will continue attacks on Ukrainian territory with 'Oreshnik' missiles without a nuclear warhead.
'It is unlikely that Russia will dare to attack the West with nuclear warheads. They can only shoot at Ukraine with dummies, as was the case when they struck with the 'Oreshnik' missile in the Dnipro arc. If they use a nuclear warhead, the area will suffer radioactive contamination. Such contamination can be spread by the wind not only across the territory of Ukraine but also to Russia, Belarus, Europe, Turkey, and so on. It should be understood that Russians are bloodthirsty, but they are not idiots. Therefore, it is unlikely they will risk using missiles with nuclear warheads on our territory. As for the 'Oreshnik' missile without a nuclear warhead, the warhead weighs over 1200 kg and is divided into 6 parts, each weighing less than 200 kg. These warheads have a thermal protection layer and are not made from a single solid piece of metal. They cannot contain explosive materials due to the inability to withstand temperatures due to atmospheric density,' he explained.
