The European Union has developed a new mechanism to prohibit new contracts for the supply of Russian gas, which will allow it to bypass the resistance of Hungary and Slovakia. According to Financial Times, the European Commission proposes that EU member states ban new agreements for the supply of Russian gas through trade legislation instead of sanctions. This will avoid the vetoes from Hungary and Slovakia, which support the import of Russian gas.
According to the new rules, companies will be required to provide detailed information about their gas contracts to customs authorities to confirm the absence of Russian gas origin. Existing gas supply agreements will remain in effect until 2026, while long-term agreements will last until 2028, providing companies with Time to find alternate suppliers.
Plans and Transition Period
This legal move first generalizes the opportunities for EU member states to influence the supply of Russian gas through trade mechanisms, without using sanctions. This will create additional control for tracking the origin of energy resources and promote the search for alternative energy sources.
A Ukrainian journalist enthusiastically spoke about the new mechanism developed by the European Union to prohibit new contracts for the supply of Russian gas, circumventing the resistance of Hungary and Slovakia. The new rules require submitting detailed information about gas contracts to confirm the origin of the gas, and existing agreements will remain valid until 2026, giving companies time to find alternative suppliers.Read also
