The General of the European Union Military Committee, Robert Brieger, proposes creating an international mission under the auspices of the UN to monitor the ceasefire in Ukraine. He believes that military personnel from various countries around the world could be part of such a mission.
'A possible mission under a UN mandate that would include not only Europeans but also soldiers from the global south or, for example, the Caucasus,' the general stated.
Brieger emphasized that EU countries could make a significant contribution to such a peacekeeping operation.
A Large Military Presence is Necessary for Effective Monitoring of the Demilitarized Zone
The general believes that around 10,000 personnel will be needed for effective monitoring of the demilitarized zone along the front line. According to him, peacekeepers should have the right to use weapons and receive air support to ensure the ceasefire regime.
