ISW assessed how the operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Kursk influenced Putin's rating.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine are successfully conducting an operation in the Kursk region of Russia, leading to increased dissatisfaction of the Russian population with Vladimir Putin's actions. This is claimed by Russian state agencies that conducted relevant surveys.
According to the Public Opinion Foundation, as of August 25, 2023, 28% of Russian citizens expressed outrage or dissatisfaction with the actions of the Russian authorities. This is a significant increase compared to previous surveys. Analysts also note a drop in support for Putin, which stood at 73.6% as of August 18.
Although these surveys may not fully reflect the real mood of Russian society, they indicate growing dissatisfaction after the beginning of the operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kursk region. The Kremlin is trying to explain its strategy in Ukraine to the domestic audience and limits the recognition of this discontent.
Ukrainian troops continue to advance in the Kursk region, in particular, they have occupied another 2 km of Russian territory. There are also reports of replenishing the exchange fund with prisoners of war.
