IAEA reported on the state of the Chernobyl NPP shelter after enemy attack.

Representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visited the damaged shelter of the Chernobyl NPP, which was attacked by a Russian drone. This information was published by IAEA in its message.
The drone punctured a hole in the roof of the New Safe Confinement, which is a large shelter covering the old sarcophagus of the destroyed fourth block of the Chernobyl NPP and prevents the spread of radioactive substances.
Smoke and the smell of burning plastic, coming from the combustion of flammable roof cladding material, were found at the site.
IAEA experts also identified damage to the outer and inner shells of the arch. A hole with a diameter of about six meters was formed, and some equipment and electrical cables were damaged. However, the supporting beams did not suffer significant damage.
IAEA stated that the repair of the shelter will begin once the fire is completely extinguished. They also reported that the radiation level at the site has not changed.
It should be reminded that President Zelensky reported an attack by a Russian drone on the shelter at the Chernobyl NPP, the fire has been extinguished, the radiation background has not changed, but the damage to the shelter is serious.
IAEA confirmed that explosions occurred over the sarcophagus that protects the remains of the fourth reactor at the Chernobyl NPP at night on February 14, causing a fire.
The sarcophagus was supposed to operate for about 20-40 years, but a new shelter was designed in the 2000s. Its construction began in 2012, and it was put into operation in 2019.
For the creation of the new shelter, 400 thousand cubic meters of concrete mix and 7 thousand tons of metal structures were used. The construction lasted 206 days and involved 90 thousand people.
According to the State Emergency Service, the radiation background after the drone strike on the shelter of the Fourth power unit of the Chernobyl NPP is normal.
