Germany decided to remove the bicycle path worth 30 million euros: the reason surprises.

The expensive bike path will be removed in Hamburg
In the German city of Hamburg, a decision was made to remove the bike path, which cost €30 million. According to the media outlet Bild, Elbstrasse street in the west of the city is the most expensive street in Germany.
As part of the renovation, which lasted since 2021, four kilometers of the road were repaired, along with replacement of water pipes, electric cables, and gas pipes. In addition, approximately 3.9 km of bike paths were constructed on the road. The total expenditure on the renovation, funded by the budget, exceeds €30 million.
However, it turned out that the street is too narrow, and cars cannot help but encroach on the bike path, especially when turning. This creates serious obstacles for cyclists, who are at risk of accidents. To address this issue, local authorities have initiated negotiations with law enforcement agencies and traffic services.
According to experts' estimates, adapting the bicycle path to the required standards will require re-planning the street. This renovation project may take several million euros. It should be noted that cycling is particularly popular in Germany: about 80% of the population owns a bicycle.
Let's recall that German researchers predict a significant decline in demand for cars in the European Union. The director of the Center for Automotive Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Ferdinand Dudenhffer, warned that this autumn will be 'horrible for the European automotive industry'.
