Intelligence Disguised as Science: The Chinese Navy Maps the World Ocean - WSJ.

China Expands Ocean Research, Threatening US Allies
China continues to expand its ocean research by dispatching fleets of research vessels beyond its waters. The results of these studies provide Beijing with crucial military information that enhances its influence in the maritime sphere and poses a threat to US allies.
Despite protests from countries such as Japan and India regarding the presence of the Chinese fleet, Beijing is undeterred in conducting prolonged expeditions to map the ocean floor, as noted in The Wall Street Journal article.
It is noted that the collected data has various applications - from scientific to resource extraction. However, the very use of civilian research by China for military purposes poses a threat to US allies.
'If this information can be important to the Chinese military and they seek to obtain it, they will do so... There are no barriers here,' emphasizes Matthew Fuinaol, a senior research fellow for the 'China Power' project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
The Wall Street Journal notes that Chinese research vessels are embarking on expeditions around the world. Collecting data about currents, temperature, and salinity has numerous applications. For example, detailed scans of the ocean floor can provide information on underwater mines and sonar accuracy.
Moreover, the research may aid in determining the presence of minerals for extraction. China is already leading in the extraction of minerals essential for defense, electric vehicles, and other technologies, and is outpacing Western commercial efforts.
According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, during the research, 64 research vessels operating under the guidance of Chinese institutions, law enforcement, universities, and state-owned enterprises, more than 80% have ties or exhibit behavior indicating support for Beijing's geopolitical agenda.
