How many people live in the de-occupied Kherson region? The figures are shocking.

According to the Kherson Regional Authority, the population of the de-occupied areas of Kherson region at the beginning of 2025 is about 148.8 thousand people, which is only 30% of the previous figure before the war began.
The authorities of the Kherson region reported that at the beginning of 2022, about 1 million people lived in the region, which accounted for 2.4% of the population of Ukraine. However, due to occupation, military actions, and mass migration of the population to other regions and abroad, the number of residents in the region has sharply decreased. It is now impossible to accurately estimate the population of the region, said the military administration.
The Kherson Regional Authority also pointed out the difficult demographic situation in the region, which existed even before the war began. But the war further worsened the situation, reducing the population due to migration and natural factors - low birth rates and rising mortality.
For example, last year, the population of the de-occupied communities of Kherson region decreased by 21 thousand people.
In the Luhansk region, as of January 31, 2025, more than 95% of the territory remains under temporary occupation by Russian troops. Combat actions continue in this region, particularly in the Sievierodonetsk and Svatove districts. Currently, the Ukrainian authorities cannot fully operate in these territories. This was reported by the Luhansk Regional Authority.
Russia is also systematically conducting attacks in Kherson region, targeting civilians and public transport. For example, on January 2, a route taxi was shelled in Kherson, resulting in five people being injured. According to the investigation, around 10:45, Russian troops attacked the Korabelnyi district of Kherson using artillery. On January 1, a civilian was killed in Kherson as a result of enemy shelling. The head of the Kherson city military administration, Roman Mrochek, reported that a 23-year-old volunteer, who was helping restore the community, was killed.
