Times columnist, Juliet Samuel, claims that Trump will not be able to achieve lasting peace in Ukraine, despite his promises. Even if Volodymyr Zelensky shows a willingness to compromise, Trump will not be able to meet Putin's demands. Steps such as lifting sanctions or unfreezing Russian assets require support from Congress, the G7, and the EU.
The columnist also believes that Putin's goals in Ukraine are deeper than many think. He wants to conquer the country to change the demographic situation in Russia.
Russia is ready for a long-term war
Expert Maximilian Hess believes that Russia is ready for a prolonged war, not quick victories. It allocates significant resources for defense. This requires a third of the planned budget for 2025, or 6% of GDP.
'Putin hopes to disarm Ukraine to gain an advantage, but there is no path to a grand deal that the US or Europe could accept,' writes Samuel.
The columnist also notes that the cheapest way to ensure the security of Europe in the long term is to prevent the disintegration of Ukraine.
