In Poland, doctors sent a pregnant woman to a psychiatric hospital after she intended to have an abortion.

A woman from Łódź was placed in a psychiatric hospital after she reported her intention to have an abortion late in her pregnancy. This was reported by 'Glavcom' citing Gazeta Wyborcza.

Anita was in the gynecology department of the Central Clinical Hospital of the Łódź Medical University. At a late stage of pregnancy, a serious developmental defect of the fetus was discovered, even though earlier doctors had spoken of a mild form of congenital brittle bone disease and a mild course of the illness.

When she informed the doctors of her intentions, the medical staff decided to take away her freedom and placed her in a separate cell of the psychiatric ward.

Anita had asked the doctors to carry out an abortion due to the threat to her physical and mental health, but she was refused.

Two days later, doctors and psychologists from the diagnostic and observation department confirmed that there were indications for an abortion. However, the hospital in Łódź refused to perform the procedure, so the woman traveled to another city, where she eventually had an abortion through an intracardiac injection.

The Patient Rights Ombudsman Bartosz Kmelevets stated that this incident raises many doubts and requires thorough investigation. The Polish Minister of Health Izabela Leszczyna also announced an inspection at the hospital.

A new service - artificial fertilization procedure funded by the state - appeared in the medical guarantees program in 2024.

According to the prosecutor's office, an 18-year-old Ukrainian gave birth to the child in a workers' hostel. After childbirth, she wrapped the infant in a plastic bag and threw it in the trash.
