Russian strikes on Ukraine's substations could lead to nuclear disaster - Media.

Ukraine's Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko warns that Russian strikes on the country's power grid pose a threat to the situation at nuclear power plants. The information was provided to Bloomberg. Currently, Kyiv controls only three out of ten operational nuclear power plants.
Ukraine has thousands of power substations, but only ten key nodes linked to nuclear stations are under threat. Their destruction could lead to blackouts and radiation emergencies.
The danger of nuclear risks is approaching Ukraine's borders with the European Union due to Russian strikes, the minister said.
"They know exactly what they are doing," Herman Halushchenko said. "It is no coincidence they are attacking substations critically important for nuclear safety".
Substations ensure the stability of power supply, as well as the operation of safety systems at nuclear plants. Nuclear stations require a constant flow of electricity to maintain the safe operation of the reactor.
Without adequate power supply, the active zone of the reactor can overheat, posing a danger due to uncontrolled radiation exposure.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expanded its monitoring mission in Ukraine to the substations to reduce the risk to nuclear safety.
Typically, IAEA inspectors monitor nuclear materials, not the country's power grids.
