Ukraine is negotiating with European airlines about the reopening of some airports.

The airport in Lviv may begin operations by 2025, despite the wartime situation. This was reported by Crispin Allison, a senior partner at insurance broker Marsh McLennan, in his interview with Reuters.
Allison stated that Kyiv has been in communication with European aviation authorities and airlines for over a year about restoring parts of air traffic. Likely, the first airport to resume operations will be Lviv.
“If regulators agree that it can be opened safely, and a political decision is made, the insurance industry is ready to support the recovery efforts,” said Crispin Allison. He added that this could happen in 2025.
The head of the State Aviation Service reported that the possibility of a phased and limited restoration of airspace for civil aviation is being considered. This will depend on the reduction of risks and the implementation of additional safety measures. However, he did not specify any timelines.
It is worth noting that Lviv region, which borders Poland, rarely becomes a target of Russian attacks, unlike other parts of Ukraine. The airport in Lviv could serve up to 3000 passengers per hour before the war began.
Marsh McLennan supports the Ukrainian government in creating a mechanism for insuring commercial aviation. Crispin Allison noted that the insurance broker already has a program for insuring vessels transporting cargo through the Black Sea corridor. The possibility of including the aviation sector in this program is also being considered.
