Nearly a quarter of electricity sold in Ukraine's market is generated from natural gas.


Electricity in Ukraine: main sources of import
In September 2024, nearly a quarter (25%) of electricity, which was sold in the 'day-ahead' market and the intraday market, was generated from natural gas. This information is provided in the report of the SE 'Market Operator' on environmental aspects for September 2024.
Nuclear fuel ranks second in energy sources, accounting for 21.23% of all electricity. According to ExPro, in September 2024, a total of 414.6 thousand MWh of electricity was sold, generated at nuclear power plants. The total electricity generation at nuclear power plants amounted to 3878 thousand MWh.
It is also worth noting that in September, 15.87% of electricity sold in the bilateral contracts market was generated from hydropower, 13.09% from solar energy, 3.51% from coal, 2.00% from wind energy, 0.64% from biogas, 0.28% from biomass, and 0.10% from other fuels. The origin of 5.55% of electricity sold in the bilateral contracts market could not be determined in September 2024. Also, according to the 'Market Operator', 12.59% of the electricity sources are unknown due to the lack of information from some market participants.
Spot markets are also important, as in September 2024, 88.7 thousand MWh of electricity of import origin was sold. This amount accounts for approximately 20% of the total import volume.
