Recently, there have been disputes in Ukraine regarding the diagnostic shooting of wild migratory birds in the Odessa region. Local ecologists have expressed outrage over this measure, which is intended to prevent a possible outbreak of avian influenza.

The Chief State Veterinary Inspector approved the schedule for shooting wild migratory birds in all regions of Ukraine for further research. According to 'Glavkom', the head of the State Consumer Service, Serhiy Tkachuk, explained the situation.

How many cases of influenza have been registered?

According to Tkachuk, the risk of influenza spreading among birds significantly increases during migration periods and under extremely warm winter conditions. In 2025, Europe recorded 854 cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza.

In 2025, there were only four cases of influenza in Ukraine, one of which was among wild birds. In 2024, the number of cases in the country reached 18, including one in a zoo, six among wild birds, and 11 among domestic birds.

Diagnostic shooting of birds

Diagnostic shooting of birds is carried out only with the appropriate permits, noted Tkachuk. This process is regulated by laws and instructions and aims to minimize the need for sample collection. A crucial priority is the representativeness and quality of research.

The service conducts a comprehensive veterinary and sanitary measures, among which is monitoring various bird species. Similar measures have been carried out in Ukraine for over 20 years.

This situation has provoked a negative response among ecologists, who are concerned about the potential consequences for the natural environment and violations of international standards. Scientists also warn of the possibility of a new avian influenza pandemic.
