The Reverse Kissinger: Analyzing Trump's Russian Strategy - WP.

Trump: Thawing Relations with Russia - Strategy or Uncertainty?
President Donald Trump continues to show activity in foreign policy, focusing his attention on Russia, Europe, and the conflict in Ukraine. However, analysts and journalists from The Washington Post emphasize that it is not entirely clear how these tactical steps fit into the overall strategy of the president.
According to experts, Trump can be compared to a 'reverse Kissinger.' This term is used to explain his diplomatic weaving, similar to the actions of Henry Kissinger in the 1970s. Kissinger persuaded then-President Richard Nixon to establish relations with China to weaken the influence of the Soviet Union. In modern conditions, a promising strategy may be the opposite: the U.S. is trying to bring Russia to its side, but this may weaken the alliance between Russia and China, which is currently the main threat to the United States.
However, it is worth noting that Trump and his team have not announced any specific plan. This will be necessary if there is indeed a plan to isolate China. Furthermore, using such a strategy may be unsuccessful since Russia and China have recently reaffirmed their 'friendship without borders.' They have united within BRICS, which aims to undermine U.S. financial dominance. Also joining BRICS are Iran and other anti-American states. In addition, the presidents of Russia and China - Putin and Xi Jinping - are confident that autocratic regimes are strengthening while democracy is weakening.
Supporters of the 'reverse Kissinger' should remember one historical example. When the U.S. approached China during Nixon's presidency, it cost them support for South Vietnam in the war with North Vietnam. After that, American troops completely withdrew from Vietnam, leaving them at the mercy of fate. American leaders promised to return in the event of a ceasefire violation. But when North Vietnam captured Saigon in 1975, American assistance never came. Perhaps Trump has a strategic plan explaining his closeness to Russia, but he needs to clarify it. If his main goal is to isolate China, Trump must explain how exactly it can be achieved.
It is worth noting that American journalists warn Trump that sacrificing Ukraine without proper justification may become a failing decision in his foreign policy.
